While the incidence of car theft has declined overall the last few years, it’s still a problem and probably always will be. In the United States alone, one vehicle is stolen once every 40 seconds. So by the time you finish reading this article, a handful of people will be victimized by auto theft. While preventing a thief from stealing your classic Volvo may almost be an impossible task, several anti-theft devices can make it far more challenging.
Volvos are considered being almost like “a tank” safety-wise,but that’s pretty much the only connection with this crazy clip!
While anti-theft devices are helpful, you can avoid your car being stolen with some very simple methods. While this might seem obvious, turn off your vehicle and don’t leave the key in your classic car when it’s vacated. Believe it or not, one-third of people who responded to a survey admitted that they didn’t turn off their vehicle after leaving it at one time or another. You can’t possibly make it easier for a thief to steal your classic Volvo than to do this.
If you store anything valuable in your vehicle, conceal them and always park in an area that is well lit. This helps reduce the possibility of theft more than most might believe. Thieves tend to go after the easiest targets.
Aside from following these tips, you can take further action by installing anti-theft devices. A steering wheel lock is one item that can be used. It really became when known when “The Club” lock was released, and has been one of the more common anti-theft devices used. With a lock in place, a steering wheel becomes immobilized and therefore can prevent thefts. Though, many have questioned how effective it really is, and this is evidenced by the fact that classic Volvo cars have still been stolen even with it in place. Thieves have found ways to get the lock off, including cutting the steering wheel.
Another common device is the car alarm. While an alarm certainly can scare off some thieves, people have been grown accustomed to hearing them and it may not be enough to prevent a theft. There are alarms that will send you a notification if they have been activated, giving you a heads up.
Here is another alarm tip. Buy one that doesn’t stand out and tends to blend in with other wires. If a advertisement or sticker is attached to the alarm, take it off. Also, installing a hood lock cable might be a good idea so the thief can’t access your car alarm mechanism.
An effective device is the wheel lock. It’s also referred to as a wheel boot, and is designed to immobilize your classic Volvo completely. A special key is required to unlock them. They do work well, but keep in mind that you will have to remove them each time you get back into your car, and put them on when you vacate. Doing so can become a pain after a while.
